The Social Network is to be released in UK cinemas on October 15th 2010. It tells a version on the story of how Mark Zuckerberg achieved billionaire status at 26 by creating Facebook. The film has proved itself as both a critical and box office hit. Since its release in the US it has been no.1 for two weeks and has taken in $46 million.

The Social Network was directed by David Fincher the acclaimed director of Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The two leads are played by Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Garfield as co-founder Eduado Saverin. The film also stars Justin Timberlake who plays Sean Parker the inventor of Napstar who partners with Mark Zuckerberg to turn Facebook into one of the largest websites in the world.

Zuckerberg refused to cooperate with producers in the making of the film and has stated that he will never watch it. This isn’t particularly shocking as he has been portrayed as a scathing, money driven, insecure character with little personality.

Zuckerberg attended Harvard University to study computer science and has been described as notorious before he even got there. He created a music player before he went to Harvard which prompted Microsoft to offer him a job paying millions – he turned it down. Whilst at Harvard he created ‘facemash’ a hot or not site for Harvard Alumi. In the movie he is depicted as genius who became disillusioned by a culture of money and privilege which he never had – a persona which some ex-employees and fellow Harvard students have confirmed.

However some critics of the film have suggested that the creation of Facebook was not all sex, drugs and bad ambition as the movie has turned it into. Whatever you’re opinion on Mark Zuckerberg and the creation of Facebook there is a lot of scandal surrounding Zuckerberg. A week after Facebook was launched he was accused of stealing the idea by 3 Harvard seniors. Furthermore in March 2010 BusinessInsider ran a story in which they claimed Mark Zuckerberg had been hacking into the emails of journalists and competitors company systems to change user’s information and make their site less useful.

It’s surprising it has taken so long to make a film about Facebook as it defines us as generation. Whether the film has been sensationalized or not it’s a fascinating story. Regardless or your personal opinion on the facts of the story – to quote the films ad line – you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies.

STV are reporting that new Doctor Who Matthew Smith will battle a host of old enemies in a dramatic end-of-series finale. In the finale, the Doctor and assistant Amy Pond (Karen Gillian) will face off against Cybermen, Sontarans and Daleks.

A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “The producers wanted Matt to end his first season as the Time Lord with something explosive and exciting. And this fits the bill. It’s got all the right elements for a great finale and plenty of opportunities for cliffhangers, with fans not knowing who survives.”

A recent Mashable post by columnist Stan Schroeder showed a Facebook status update in which the actress showed her relationship status as ‘engaged’. However, other sources online claim the actress is not ready to tie the knot, so who is right?

As Stan points out in his article, social networks are becoming the first point of contact for an increasing number of celebrities, and it is entirely believable that the evergreen Ms Barrymore has updated her status before informing showbiz sources in the mainstream media.

Or is it another case of hacked Facebook account?

Tomorrow morning (8pm EST tonight, or 1am GMT) Nintendo’s popular handheld console gets an update which will make it easier for users to upload and view their photographs on Facebook. It is expected that this upgrade will be applied as normal via the systems menu.

It is expected that this will introduce a fairly large number of fiddled / DSi enhanced / edited pictures to Facebook. So brace yourself and prepare to be tagged looking like you’ve escaped from a hall of mirrors.
