The Top 10 Sci-Fi Movies of All-time?

SciFiNow has been running a poll in recent months to discover the greatest sci-fi film of all time. With industry writers having whittled the list down to a top 10, the magazine has opened the final stages to the public to choose the best.

The nominations, in no particular order, are:

Alien (1979 – Ridley Scott)
ET: The Extra Terrestrial (1982 – Steven Spielberg)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968 – Stanley Kubrick)
Planet Of The Apes (1968 – Franklin J. Schaffner)
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977 – George Lucas)
Blade Runner (1982 – Ridley Scott)
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991 – James Cameron)
Forbidden Planet (1956 – Fred M. Wilcox)
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980 – Irvin Kershner)
The Matrix (1999 – The Wachowski Brothers)

My own personal favourite, ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ – the 1951 original, not the Keanu Reeves turkey – didn’t make the final cut. Was it even considered?

There are a few glaring omissions I would have classed above some of those which made the final ten.

If it has already happened to you, you’ll no doubt have been embarrassed when it happened. So, spare a thought for Gillian Cooke of the UK’s female Bobsleigh team when, preparing for her team’s run, she split her spandex leggings.

Lucas Wants Star Wars 3D

George Lucas’ ‘Star Wars’ trilogy – the original one, not the prequel trilogy – has been remastered and re-released almost as often as Slade’s ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ and now Lucas wants to release it again – this time in 3D.

Totalfilm.com report that Lucas has apparently spent several years looking for the best 3D conversion method, but up until now technology has scuppered any plans to remaster the film in 3D. However, with the release of James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Lucas believes his vision for Star Wars could now become reality.

“I can appreciate what he [Cameron] went through to do it,” said Lucas. “[I'm] happy it’s so successful, and worked very well in 3D. [I] haven’t been a big fan of 3D, but that movie definitely improves in 3D.”

“We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take Star Wars and put it in 3D. But, (the) technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.”

While the thought of Luke, Han, Chewie, Obi-Wan and the rest might sound exciting; equally the thought of Jar-Jar Binks in 3D, however, doesn’t.

It seems to be a growing issue of geek pride – did you watch The Guild before they were famous? This blogger proudly announces he did (though he wonders whether the other GYBO’s bloggers would be so proud).

If you’ve not already heard of The Guild let alone watched them via Xbox Live then this latest clever piece of viral marketing from them will change that. It’s a spoof music video which calls on all that is holy of MMO (or near enough).

Felicia Day, star and the brains behind The Guild, is on a roll recently given her appearance in the “missing” Dollhouse last episode/in between of season 1. You’ll remember that The Powers That Be granded Dollhouse a season 2 despite poor showings in the States.

At the time of writing this video is now 3rd in “All Music Videos” in iTunes US.

In this video from them we see a daughter introduce her new boyfriend to her parents for the first time. Things take a turn for a worse when her parents are clearly more tubez savvy than he is.

That chick who makes celeb parodies on YouTube has an instant hit on her hands with a parody of the Taylor Swift ballad You Belong With Me.

I’m talking, of course, of the Venetian Princess who has established herself as a well deserved favourite among YouTube’s culture vultures.

Well over 100,000 views within the first couple of days on the site means that You Belong With Me (“Just A Zombie”) will be with all of us for many months to come!

First off; don’t watch this is you’re not a fan of glory action video games. Second off; don’t watch this if you don’t like musicals!

No kidding.

“My true love just blew me away,” sings one corpse for this trailer from the Bethesda Softworks.

There’s a catch with this video. Loads of people might start flooding the internet with it. We’re sharing it cos it’s cool. However, you can pop over to wetthegame.com, tackle Bethsoft’s age checking monkey you’ll be able to investigate the promise of “Share to win”. I say “investigate” because as much as I like to tour the site I can’t find any reference of the competition.

THe JK Divorce Video features the same Chris Brown “Forever” music which has been the centre of much debate on the web. Brown, of course, is in the headlines for his assault on his ex-partner Rihanna and his very public apology to her.

Recreating The Dark Crystal with Spore

Do you remember the fantastic 1982 Jim Henson movie “The Dark Crystal“. It featured two brave gelfings in a struggle to cope with the Dark Crystal and perhaps help the wise and kind Mystics against the evil and cruel Skeksi.

Fast forward the clock to today and EA’s rather addictive creature creating game – Spore. Spore allows users to create creatures to play and to add to their friends’ game worlds. Rather cleverly EA let users upload video captures of their favourite creatures to YouTube.

The two combine nicely in this YouTube mashup – the music from The Dark Crystal along with a mystic like creature created in Spore.

There’s also some pretty good attempts to create the bad guys. Try this one out;
