Blogger grounded by the law for his Guns N' Roses leak

Kevin Cogill leaked Chinese Democracy, the Guns N’ Roses album which is said to have taken 17 years to make, has been sentenced to 2 months at home and a year of probation.

The home confinement sentence is companied by a requirement that he appears in an anti-piracy television ad. We suspect Kevin will hate that part the most. The ad, which is bound to be very embarrassing indeed, is expected to air during the Grammy Awards in January.

Kevin uploaded nine tracks from the album to the web five months before the CD was due out. He could have faced a $100,000 fine and up to a year in prison. American federal prosecutors pushed for a strong sentence in order to send a message to other copyright violators.

Cogill pleaded guilty. He had already lost his job because of the case.

Sales of Chinese Democracy have been enough to reach platinum status. Although more than 2.6m copies have been sold around the world industry pundits consider the performance to be disappointing as expectations were far higher.
