What's so good about vampire love?

The first thing to get straight is that Let the Right One In is not your average teen/horror film. The inspiration for the title of the film refers to the Morrissey song “Let the Right One Slip In”, whilst the film itself is based on the vampire fiction novel by Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist.

The story is based round a 12-year-old boy called Oskar, who falls for a 12-year-old vampire known as Eli – who has been this age for as long as she remembers. The film takes place in Stockholm in the early 80s, set in a grim utilitarian tower block in the suburbs. Here is where Oskar meets Eli – who is living next door to him – and where their innocent relationship develops.

Oskar is an awkward teenager, who, as a hobby, spends most of his time playing with knives and creating a scrapbook of the local murders that take place. Oskar’s introverted existence is further displayed throughout the film, being the victim of daily bullying from school. As his relationship with Eli develops – and when he realises that she is, in fact, a vampire – Oskar soon learns the confidence to stand up for himself against his tormentors.

Though what is impressive about the film is how it manages to bring so many different themes together – such as loneliness and murder – to create a compelling story of love and death. In addition, Eli’s character – who is mysterious, yet innocent at the same time – is portrayed as an unfortunate victim of circumstance, as opposed to your typical over the top blood thirsty vampire.

The overall result is very effective in creating a chilling tale without taking the vampire myths too seriously and the film will no doubt gain respect as being one of the best films to be released in 2009.
